A cranial electrotherapy device that uses gentle electrical currents to ease anxiety, improve mood, support better sleep, and enhance emotional regulation.
01
What is this service?

Alpha-Stim is an FDA-cleared, non-invasive cranial electrotherapy stimulation (CES) device that delivers low-level electrical currents through clips attached to the earlobes. These microcurrents interact with the brain to regulate mood-related neurotransmitters and brainwave patterns, helping to restore emotional balance and calm the nervous system.

02
Why do we use it?

Anxiety, depression, and insomnia often arise from imbalances in brainwave activity and nervous system dysregulation. Alpha-Stim offers a drug-free, evidence-based approach to ease emotional distress and improve mental clarity. It helps calm racing thoughts, reduce irritability, and promote deeper, more restorative sleep—without the side effects of medication.

03
How does it help with mental healthcare?

Alpha-Stim supports mental health by regulating brain function and promoting emotional resilience. It enhances therapeutic outcomes by calming the mind, reducing overactivity in the nervous system, and improving the brain’s natural ability to manage stress. It can be especially beneficial alongside talk therapy, mindfulness, and other holistic interventions.

Frequently Asked

Alpha-Stim, explained

How does Alpha-Stim work?

Alpha-Stim uses cranial electrotherapy stimulation (CES) — gentle microcurrent delivered through ear-clip electrodes to modulate brainwave activity. The current is so low it’s imperceptible to most patients. Sessions cause increases in alpha wave activity (associated with relaxation) and decreases in beta wave activity (associated with anxious arousal). Effects are typically felt within the first session and accumulate over a 4-6 week course.

What conditions does Alpha-Stim treat at RECO Immersive?

Alpha-Stim is FDA-cleared for anxiety, depression, and insomnia, and it’s commonly used for chronic pain. At RECO Immersive in Delray Beach we deploy it for generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, treatment-resistant depression, sleep difficulties, and as a non-pharmacologic adjunct during early sobriety when medication options are limited. It is particularly useful for patients who can’t tolerate or don’t want to add another psychiatric medication.

How long are Alpha-Stim sessions and how often?

Sessions are 20 minutes. During residential or intensive outpatient programming at RECO Immersive, patients typically receive Alpha-Stim five days a week — integrated into the daily schedule alongside therapy, biofeedback, and other modalities. Maintenance protocols after discharge are typically 20 minutes daily for 30 days, then tapered to 2-3x weekly as symptoms allow.

Are there side effects?

Alpha-Stim has an exceptionally clean safety profile. The most common side effect is a mild headache or dizziness in the first session or two, which resolves with continued use or by lowering the current. There are no contraindications with antidepressants, mood stabilizers, antipsychotics, or anti-anxiety medications, which makes it especially valuable in our patient population.

How does it compare to TMS?

Alpha-Stim and TMS are both non-invasive brain stimulation but they work differently. TMS uses magnetic pulses focused on a specific cortical region to treat major depression — sessions are 20-40 minutes, daily for 6 weeks, in-clinic. Alpha-Stim uses microcurrent across the whole brain, sessions are 20 minutes, can be self-administered, and treats anxiety as well as depression. TMS is more powerful for treatment-resistant depression; Alpha-Stim is more accessible and treats a broader symptom profile.
