Somatic Experiencing
Release the traumatic stress stored in your body and restore your nervous system's natural capacity for regulation through somatic experiencing therapy.
What Is Somatic Experiencing?
Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a body-oriented therapeutic approach developed by Dr. Peter Levine for the treatment of trauma and stress-related disorders. SE is based on the observation that trauma is not primarily a psychological event but a physiological one: traumatic experiences overwhelm the nervous system's capacity to process and integrate the event, leaving the body stuck in patterns of incomplete defensive responses (fight, flight, or freeze). These stuck responses manifest as the symptoms we recognize as PTSD, anxiety, depression, chronic pain, dissociation, and other trauma-related conditions. SE works by helping the body complete these interrupted responses and restore the nervous system's natural capacity for self-regulation.
At RECO Immersive, Somatic Experiencing is a key component of our trauma treatment programming. Many clients arrive with significant trauma that is stored not just in their memories but in their bodies, manifesting as chronic tension, hypervigilance, numbness, pain, digestive issues, and other somatic symptoms. Traditional talk therapy addresses the cognitive and narrative dimensions of trauma but may not fully resolve the physiological activation trapped in the body. SE directly addresses this body-based component, providing a crucial complement to cognitive trauma therapies like EMDR and CPT.
How Somatic Experiencing Works
SE works by gradually increasing the client's awareness of internal bodily sensations (interoception) and using this awareness to access and resolve the physiological activation associated with trauma. The therapist guides the client through a process called titration, gently approaching traumatic material in small, manageable increments rather than plunging into full trauma narratives. This careful pacing prevents re-traumatization and allows the nervous system to gradually discharge the stored survival energy associated with the traumatic event.
A key concept in SE is pendulation: the natural oscillation between states of activation (sympathetic arousal) and states of calm (parasympathetic regulation). Trauma disrupts this natural rhythm, locking individuals into chronic hyper- or hypo-arousal. SE helps restore pendulation by alternating attention between sensations of distress and sensations of safety and resource, gradually rebuilding the nervous system's capacity to move fluidly between activation and rest.
Core Components at RECO Immersive
- Tracking sensations: Developing awareness of physical sensations, movements, impulses, and energy patterns in the body as indicators of nervous system activation and regulation
- Titration: Carefully approaching traumatic material in small, manageable doses to prevent overwhelm and allow gradual processing and discharge
- Pendulation: Guiding attention between states of activation and calm to restore the nervous system's natural oscillatory rhythm
- Resourcing: Identifying and strengthening internal and external resources (sensations, memories, relationships, places) that support nervous system regulation
- Completing defensive responses: Facilitating the completion of fight, flight, or freeze responses that were interrupted during the traumatic event, releasing the stored survival energy
- Discharge and integration: Supporting the body's natural process of releasing stored traumatic activation through trembling, shaking, breathing changes, warmth, and other discharge phenomena
What to Expect in Somatic Experiencing Sessions
SE sessions at RECO Immersive are conducted by therapists with specialized training through the Somatic Experiencing Trauma Institute. Sessions are typically one-on-one, lasting 50 to 60 minutes. Unlike some trauma therapies, SE does not require you to recount traumatic events in detail. Instead, the focus is on what is happening in your body in the present moment as you gently approach traumatic material.
Sessions may involve sitting, lying down, or gentle movement as your therapist guides your attention to physical sensations, helps you notice patterns of activation and regulation, and supports the natural discharge of stored traumatic energy. The pace is always carefully calibrated to your window of tolerance, ensuring that the work remains therapeutic rather than re-traumatizing.
Conditions SE Treats
Somatic Experiencing is particularly effective for PTSD, complex trauma, developmental trauma, shock trauma, chronic stress, anxiety disorders, dissociative symptoms, chronic pain, somatic symptom disorders, and the physiological manifestations of trauma including hypervigilance, insomnia, startle responses, and autonomic dysregulation. It is especially valuable for individuals whose trauma symptoms are primarily somatic or who have not responded fully to cognitive trauma therapies.
Benefits of Somatic Experiencing
- Resolves body-based trauma: SE directly addresses the physiological component of trauma that talk therapy alone may not fully resolve
- Prevents re-traumatization: The titrated, gentle approach of SE minimizes the risk of re-traumatization that can occur with exposure-based methods
- Restores nervous system regulation: SE rebuilds the autonomic nervous system's capacity for natural self-regulation, reducing chronic hyper- and hypo-arousal
- Does not require detailed narrative: SE can process trauma effectively without requiring clients to recount traumatic events in detail, making it suitable for preverbal trauma, amnesia, or overwhelming traumatic experiences
- Reduces somatic symptoms: By resolving stored physiological activation, SE often produces significant improvement in chronic pain, tension, digestive issues, and other somatic symptoms associated with trauma
- Builds interoceptive awareness: SE develops the capacity to sense and respond to internal body signals, a foundational skill for emotional regulation and overall well-being
