Healing happens in connection. Our facilitated group programs provide peer support, shared learning, and a powerful sense of community during recovery.

Understanding Group Therapy

What Is Group Therapy?

Group therapy is a form of psychotherapy in which one or more licensed therapists facilitate treatment with a small group of clients simultaneously, typically between six and twelve participants. Far from being a lesser alternative to individual therapy, group therapy is a distinct and powerful treatment modality with unique therapeutic factors that cannot be replicated in one-on-one sessions. Decades of research have consistently demonstrated that group therapy is as effective as individual therapy for most conditions, and for some individuals, it is the most impactful component of their treatment experience.

The therapeutic power of group work lies in what psychiatrist Irvin Yalom identified as the eleven therapeutic factors of group therapy. These include universality (the realization that you are not alone in your struggles), altruism (the healing that comes from helping others), interpersonal learning (developing relational skills in a real social environment), group cohesiveness (the sense of belonging and acceptance), instillation of hope (witnessing the progress of peers), and catharsis (the emotional relief of expressing feelings in a supportive setting).

At RECO Immersive, group therapy is a cornerstone of our treatment program. Our small census and intentional community model ensure that groups remain intimate, safe, and deeply supportive. Each group is facilitated by a licensed therapist with specialized training in group dynamics and the specific therapeutic modality being employed.

How Group Therapy Works

Group therapy at RECO Immersive operates through several distinct formats, each serving a specific therapeutic purpose within your overall treatment plan:

Process Groups

Process groups provide a space for open-ended emotional exploration and interpersonal engagement. Facilitated by a licensed therapist, these groups allow members to share their experiences, feelings, and challenges in a confidential, non-judgmental environment. The therapist guides the group dynamic, helping members notice interpersonal patterns, give and receive feedback, and develop healthier ways of relating. Process groups are particularly valuable for individuals struggling with isolation, relationship difficulties, and emotional avoidance.

Psychoeducational Groups

Psychoeducational groups combine structured teaching with group discussion to build understanding of mental health conditions, treatment approaches, coping strategies, and wellness practices. Topics include understanding your diagnosis, the neuroscience of emotion, stress management, healthy communication, relapse prevention, and building a sustainable recovery lifestyle. These groups empower clients with knowledge that supports informed participation in their own treatment and long-term self-management.

Skills-Based Groups

Skills groups focus on the structured teaching and practice of specific therapeutic skills, most notably from the DBT framework (mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness) and CBT toolkit (cognitive restructuring, behavioral activation, exposure practices). Group members learn each skill together, practice through exercises and role-plays, and support each other in applying skills to real-life situations.

Specialty Groups

Based on the specific needs of current residents, we offer specialty groups focused on particular themes: grief and loss, trauma processing, self-esteem and identity, healthy relationships, anger management, mindfulness meditation, and creative expression. These targeted groups allow for deeper exploration of shared concerns in a supported setting.

What to Expect

Group sessions at RECO Immersive typically last 60 to 90 minutes and occur daily as part of your treatment schedule. Groups are held in comfortable, private settings within our facility, and many take advantage of our outdoor spaces when weather and therapeutic goals align. Each session begins with a brief check-in, followed by the core therapeutic activity (whether that is open processing, skill instruction, or a structured exercise), and concludes with a summary and between-session intention-setting.

All groups operate under strict confidentiality agreements: what is shared in group stays in group. This creates the safety necessary for authentic vulnerability and honest self-exploration. You are never pressured to share before you are ready, and the facilitator ensures that each member's boundaries are respected while gently encouraging growth.

It is entirely normal to feel apprehensive about group therapy, especially if you tend toward social anxiety or have difficulty trusting others. Many of our clients report that their initial anxiety about group participation quickly gives way to a profound sense of connection, belonging, and relief as they discover that their experiences, fears, and struggles are shared by others in the room.

Conditions Group Therapy Supports

Group therapy is effective across the full range of conditions we treat:

  • Depression: Group connection directly counters the isolation, withdrawal, and hopelessness that maintain depressive episodes
  • Anxiety disorders: Practicing social interaction in a safe group setting is a powerful form of exposure for social anxiety and avoidance patterns
  • PTSD and trauma: Witnessing others' healing journeys instills hope and reduces the shame and isolation that trauma often creates
  • Bipolar disorder: Peer support and psychoeducation groups help normalize the experience and build sustainable management strategies
  • OCD: Sharing obsessive-compulsive patterns in a group reduces shame and provides accountability for exposure and response prevention practice
  • ADHD: Group skills training addresses executive function challenges while the social structure of group provides external accountability

Benefits of Group Therapy

  • Universality and belonging: Discovering that others share your experiences reduces isolation, shame, and the feeling that something is uniquely wrong with you
  • Peer support and accountability: Group members become a source of encouragement, honest feedback, and motivation for change
  • Interpersonal skill development: The group setting provides a real-time laboratory for practicing communication, assertiveness, vulnerability, and boundary-setting
  • Multiple perspectives: Hearing how others cope with similar challenges expands your own repertoire of strategies and approaches
  • Altruistic healing: The act of supporting others in their recovery strengthens your own sense of purpose and self-worth
  • Cost-effective: Group therapy delivers powerful therapeutic benefits alongside and complementary to individual sessions

Frequently Asked Questions About Group Therapy

You are never pressured to share before you are ready. Many clients begin by simply listening and observing, gradually participating more as they feel safe. Our facilitators are skilled at creating an inclusive environment where all levels of participation are welcomed and valued. For clients with significant social anxiety, the group itself becomes a therapeutic exposure that builds confidence over time, and many report that group therapy ultimately became their most valued treatment component.
Yes. All group members agree to strict confidentiality rules at the outset of treatment. What is shared in the group room stays in the group room. This agreement is taken seriously and reinforced by the treatment team. Breaches of confidentiality are addressed promptly and directly. This commitment to privacy creates the safety necessary for authentic sharing and meaningful therapeutic work.
While support groups provide valuable peer connection and encouragement, therapeutic groups are facilitated by licensed clinicians who guide the process using specific clinical frameworks and interventions. Group therapy involves structured therapeutic techniques, clinical observation of group dynamics, targeted interventions, and integration with your overall treatment plan. Our therapists are trained to identify and address patterns in real time, facilitate constructive feedback, manage group dynamics, and ensure that each session contributes meaningfully to clinical goals.
In our residential program, clients typically participate in one to two group sessions per day, five to six days per week. These span a variety of formats including process groups, skills groups, psychoeducational groups, and specialty groups. Your specific group schedule is tailored to your treatment plan and may be adjusted as your needs evolve throughout treatment. Group therapy is complemented by individual therapy sessions, experiential activities, and wellness programming.
