Understanding Trauma

What Is PTSD?

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that develops after experiencing or witnessing a terrifying, life-threatening, or deeply disturbing event. While it is normal to feel afraid during and after a traumatic situation, people with PTSD continue to experience intense, disturbing thoughts and feelings long after the event has ended. They may relive the trauma through flashbacks and nightmares, feel emotionally numb or detached from others, and experience hypervigilance that keeps their nervous system in a constant state of alert.

At RECO Immersive, we specialize in treating both single-incident PTSD and Complex PTSD (C-PTSD), which develops from prolonged, repeated trauma such as childhood abuse, domestic violence, or chronic neglect. Complex trauma affects not only how you process danger but also your sense of identity, your ability to regulate emotions, and your capacity for healthy relationships. Our trauma-informed approach recognizes that healing requires safety, trust, and a therapeutic environment where the whole person is honored.

Approximately 6% of the U.S. population will experience PTSD at some point in their lives, with women being twice as likely as men to develop the condition. Without treatment, PTSD can lead to severe impairment in every area of life, including work, relationships, physical health, and emotional well-being. Early and comprehensive treatment dramatically improves outcomes.

Causes and Risk Factors

PTSD can develop after any traumatic experience, including combat exposure, sexual assault, physical violence, serious accidents, natural disasters, childhood abuse or neglect, witnessing violence, sudden unexpected loss of a loved one, and medical trauma. The severity, duration, and proximity of exposure to trauma increase the risk of developing PTSD.

Risk factors include a history of prior trauma, pre-existing mental health conditions, limited social support, childhood adversity, family history of mental health disorders, and the experience of ongoing life stressors following the trauma. Protective factors include strong social support, effective coping skills, and early therapeutic intervention.

Our Trauma Treatment Approach

RECO Immersive is deeply committed to trauma-informed care. Every aspect of our program, from our physical environment to our therapeutic relationships, is designed to promote safety, trust, and empowerment. Our treatment integrates the most effective evidence-based trauma therapies available.

EMDR Therapy

The premier evidence-based treatment for PTSD. EMDR uses bilateral stimulation to help the brain reprocess traumatic memories, reducing their emotional intensity and physical impact.

Somatic & Body-Based

Somatic experiencing, yoga, breathwork, and mindfulness help release trauma stored in the body, calm the nervous system, and restore a sense of safety and embodiment.

Living After Trauma: Reclaiming Your Life

Trauma recovery is not about forgetting what happened. It is about integrating the experience so it no longer controls your present. At RECO Immersive, we help clients move from surviving to thriving, building new neural pathways, healthy relationships, and a renewed sense of purpose and possibility.

Our aftercare planning includes ongoing trauma-focused therapy, support group connections, mindfulness practices, safety planning, and strategies for managing triggers in daily life. Many trauma survivors describe the treatment experience as life-changing, opening doors to connection, joy, and freedom they thought were permanently closed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Treatment duration varies based on the type and complexity of trauma, whether single-incident or complex/developmental. Residential programs typically range from 30 to 90 days. Many clients experience meaningful improvement with EMDR in as few as 8-12 sessions, though complex trauma may require longer treatment.
Yes, many people achieve full remission from PTSD symptoms with appropriate evidence-based treatment. EMDR and trauma-focused CBT have robust research demonstrating significant symptom reduction and, in many cases, complete resolution. Even complex PTSD, while requiring more extensive treatment, responds well to comprehensive, trauma-informed care.
Many of our therapeutic approaches do not require you to describe your trauma in detail. EMDR, somatic experiencing, art therapy, and equine therapy can process traumatic material without extensive verbal narrative. Our therapists meet you where you are and never pressure you to share more than you are ready for.
